The pandemic and the subsequent travel, events and crowd restrictions have caused a noticeable change in consumer behavior, which in turn necessitates a corresponding change in every retailer’s business processes. As the Philippines reopens its economy, businesses are reassessing their strategies and recovery plans differently. In fact, about 45 percent of business owners are hesitant to resume their operations, according to a survey by the World Bank, National Economic and Development Authority and Department of Finance.[1]

The shelter-in-place directive has breached the six-month mark. Everyone has been staying indoors longer than ever before or more than initially anticipated, and it looks like the quarantine will continue. While keeping safe at home with family and loved ones or working from home and avoiding commuting may seem less taxing, a lot of people are starting to feel tired and exhausted cooped up for months on end. Not the cabin fever type of restlessness but a deeper sense of dissatisfaction or helplessness perhaps. Not the “I had a really long day” kind of tired but the “I’m deeply and inexplicably tired and I don’t know what to do about it” kind.

Taking a time out is not something new to many of us. It’s certainly not something new to me. I’ve made it a practice to pause once in a while. You know, step out of the little bubble we’ve created and take stock of what we do or not do, where we fail or need to do better, what else needs to be done, how all these relate to the bigger picture. As we’ve been told several times when we were younger, one needs to be silent from time to time to be able to listen to the other things not spoken or not said too loudly. Pretty much like walking slowly sometimes to be able to smell the flowers.
The pause of these past months is a totally different story, however. Not only was it a pause imposed on us at a time we didn’t expect but it was also something we had no control over. We had no idea how long it would take and until now, we don’t know how long we will have to stay indoors and limit our exposure outside. As much as some of us may thrive in the short pauses life allows now and then, this pause caused by the pandemic is far from being reinvigorating.
