Akamai Aims to Improve OTT Experiences with Introduction of Media Acceleration Capabilities

MANILA, Philippines. (March 22, 2017) – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader in content delivery network (CDN) services, today announced availability of Akamai Media Acceleration, which is designed to improve viewing experiences for over-the-top (OTT) video consumers and accelerate video game and other software downloads. Media Acceleration marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Akamai’s content delivery capabilities in moving to a consumer-centric approach to online video and software distribution. Technology is integrated directly into consumer applications to optimize the experience for each individual end user.

OTT operators can take advantage of more efficient communication between consumer devices and the Akamai network to deliver video that is ideally suited for the device capabilities, network type and conditions of specific end users. By overcoming many of the fundamental challenges of online video delivery, Media Acceleration can help OTT operators provide a consistently high and predictable quality of experience to which consumers are accustomed with traditional broadcast.

Vimeo, one of the world’s leading online video-sharing platforms and entertainment destinations, realized immediate improvements in its viewer experiences after implementing Akamai Media Acceleration.  “Shortly after shifting traffic to Media Acceleration, Vimeo observed higher quality video experiences for our viewers; most notably a marked increase in playbacks at HD quality,” explained Naren Venkataraman, Vice President, Engineering, Vimeo. “With video creators comprising such a large portion of our customer base, delivering high-quality video and the experience to match is of utmost importance to maintaining the Vimeo brand.”

As a part of its UDP-based delivery optimizations that are designed to maximize video throughput on a global scale, Akamai is leveraging emerging standards, including Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC), to help drive customer adoption of Media Acceleration. The capabilities can improve the speed, quality and consistency by which content is delivered over the open Internet while mitigating the degradation that often occurs in the last mile and few feet of a network – even inside the home.

“Traditional television distribution has fundamental commercial and operational characteristics that are very different from Internet video distribution today,” said Scott Brown, Vice President, Product Management, Media, Akamai. “Akamai has developed Media Acceleration to function as a vehicle through which we can introduce innovations that address the quality and scale challenges of OTT, while also facilitating sustainable economic models that can help enable the growth of video distribution over the Internet.”

Video game publishers and software providers can leverage Media Acceleration to improve the performance of video game delivery and other software download use cases. The technology will be available to Akamai customers as a feature of Akamai’s Adaptive Media Delivery and Download Delivery products.

MDPPA YoY Sales Growth

MANILA, Philippines (February 22, 2017) – The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA), which comprises motorcycle manufacturers Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kymco, breached the 1 million sales mark for the first time as it capped off 2016 with a 34 percent year-on-year (YoY) sales growth.

Reporting an all-time sales high of 1,140,338 million motorcycles in 2016, MDPPA has exceeded its initial 952,570 unit and 12 percent sales growth forecasts for the year, posting the highest growth among members of the Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI), which include six other motorcycle associations from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

MDPPA’s 2016 sales growth is attributed to the robust motorcycle demand in the first half of 2016. The group’s midyear motorcycle sales reached 544,699 units, significantly higher than its 382,568 midyear motorcycle sales in 2015.

Moped still the most popular motorcycle type in the country

With demand for moped motorcycles hitting a new all-time high, the category accounted for the lion’s share of MDPPA’s total motorcycle sales in 2016. The total moped motorcycle sales reached 418,043 units or 37 percent of the aggregate motorcycle sales.

The next leading sales driver was the business motorcycle category, which accounted for 32 percent of total motorcycle sales at 368,270 units.

Meanwhile, the 274,104 unit sales of automatic transmission posted the highest growth among the categories, with 51% increase from 2015. The robust in the category sales contributed greatly with the total sales in 2016.

Positive outlook for the motorcycle industry in 2017

Banking on a remarkable year in 2016, MDPPA is upbeat and sees a positive outlook for the motorcycle industry in 2017. The group is optimistic about replicating, if not surpassing, its 2016 sales growth this year with a conservative target of 12 to 15 percent uptick.

MDPPA credits the local motorcycle industry’s 2016 growth to an increase in private consumption, prevalent use of mopeds for personal purposes, introduction of new models, higher foreign exchange rates and remittances, and traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. The same factors will continue to fuel the industry’s performance this year.

MDPPA’s 2016 performance has definitely set the momentum for hitting an even higher sales mark this year.  MDPPA expects motorcycle sales to accelerate along with increasing demand for mobility especially in major cities.

Akamai Releases Fourth Quarter 2016 State of the Internet / Security Report

MANILA, Philippines. February 15, 2017 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader in content delivery network (CDN) services, today released its Fourth Quarter, 2016 State of the Internet / Security Report. The report, using data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform, provides analysis of the current cloud security and threat landscape, as well as insight into seasonal trends.

Download the latest State of the Internet / Security Report for data, analysis, and graphics at akamai.com/stateoftheinternet-security.

“As we saw with the Mirai botnet attacks during the third quarter, unsecured Internet of Things (IoT) devices continued to drive significant DDoS attack traffic,” said Martin McKeay, senior security advocate and senior editor, State of the Internet/Security Report. “With the predicted exponential proliferation of these devices, threat agents will have an expanding pool of resources to carry out attacks, validating the need for companies to increase their security investments. Additional emerging system vulnerabilities are expected before devices become more secure.”

Highlights from Akamai’s Fourth Quarter, 2016 State of the Internet / Security Report include:

DDoS Attacks

  • Attacks greater than 100 Gbps increased 140 percent year-over-year from Q4 2015
  • The largest DDoS attack in Q4 2016, which peaked at 517 Gbps, came from Spike, a non-IoT botnet that has been around for more than two years.
  • Seven of the 12 Q4 2016 mega attacks, those with traffic greater than 100 Gbps, can be directly attributed to Mirai.
  • The number of IP addresses involved in DDoS attacks grew significantly this quarter, despite DDoS attack totals dropping overall. The United States sourced the most IP addresses participating in DDoS attacks – more than 180,000.

Web Application Attacks

  • The United States remained the top source country for web application attacks, showing a 72 percent increase from Q3 2016.
  • SQLi, LFI, and XSS web application vectors accounted for 95 percent of observed web application attacks in Q4 2016, similar to Q3 2016.
  • The number of web application attacks in Q4 2016 was down 19 percent from Q4 2015; however, research into retail traffic over the United States Thanksgiving holiday week revealed an upward trend for four sub-verticals (apparel and footwear, consumer portals, consumer electronics and media and entertainment) that all suffered from significant web application attacks.

Top Attack Vectors

  • Of the 25 DDoS attack vectors tracked in Q4 2016, the top three were UDP fragment (27 percent), DNS (21 percent), and NTP (15 percent), while overall DDoS attacks decreased by 16 percent.
  • Akamai added a new reflection DDoS attack vector this quarter, Connectionless Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (CLDAP), which attackers abuse to amplify DDoS traffic.

“If anything, our analysis of Q4 2016 proves the old axiom ‘expect the unexpected’ to be true for the world of web security,” continued McKeay. “For example, perhaps the attackers in control of Spike felt challenged by Mirai and wanted to be more competitive. If that’s the case, the industry should be prepared to see other botnet operators testing the limits of their attack engines, generating ever larger attacks.”
