Makati, Philippines, September 21, 2016 — Students of Makati Elementary School will now be more road safety conscious during their commute thanks to Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants. As part of CPI’s 2016 Week of Caring (WOC) program, CPI employees in partnership with Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) conducted a road safety education program with roleplaying activities and outdoor games to teach safety in a child-friendly format.

Held on Day 3 of this year’s WOC, which is the annual corporate volunteerism program of CPI, the seminar targeted grade five and six students whose parents bring them to school using motorcycles. Studies show that motorcycle riders more than 50 percent risk of figuring in an accident.

Spreading the CPI culture of safety and dedication to fostering safer communities, 34  CPI volunteers participated in the activities especially in the role playing games to make the learning activity more meaningful and fun for the students. The students also received motorcycle helmets to ensure safer travel as part of the application of the program.

“At Chevron, we place such a high value on safety that it has become a real way of life for the employees. Road safety procedures are strictly practiced in the office especially with the Chevron riding technique training. Thus we are so happy to be able to spread this culture of safety to children during the Week of Caring,” said Atty. Raisa Bautista, CPI Manager for Policy, Government and Public Affairs

“It is essential that we instill obedience and discipline to the students at their young age because as they grow old, they will bring with them their knowledge on basic road safety procedures.” said Mr. Alberto Suansing, Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership Secretary-General.

Week of Caring is a five-day program that advocates volunteerism among its employees and business partners. CPI has been implementing the WOC in the Philippines for the past nine years.

Chevron kicks off Week of Caring with improvement of facilities of Laguna elementary schools

Laguna, Philippines, September 19, 2016 — Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, jumpstarted its Week of Caring (WOC) 2016 by repainting school facilities such as library, armchairs and playground rides for two elementary schools in Laguna: Bay Central Elementary School and Calamba Special Education (SPED) center.

The CPI volunteers worked with the students to repaint Bay Central’s library specifically, its 11 bookshelves and 1,600 square feet of concrete walls. While, armchairs, playground rides, the perimeter wall and two steel gates were repainted at the SPED center.

A total of 195 volunteer hours were logged in during the first two days of the annual Chevron volunteerism program. The CPI volunteers also donated a hundred books to the library’s “Knowledge is Energy” corner which made learning more fun for the students with the added visuals.

“By helping renovate school facilities to make them more conducive to learning, and especially by focusing on improving schools’ libraries, we hope to instill in the minds of the students that the library is still a very good place for knowledge and learning even in the digital age,” said Jhon Osorio, CPI Finance Manager.

The heads of the schools stressed the impact of the school brigade activities of the Week of Caring. “It gave life to our library and improved the school’s learning resource management and development system. Our library’s new fully polished condition creates a good atmosphere and convenience to cater to the student’s needs,” said Nemeflor Gumobao, Bay Central Elementary School principal.

“It’s the first time our children encountered this kind of activity where they had a great level of participation and involvement with a social investment program. It gave them a sense of fulfillment, boosted their self-confidence and created an opportunity for them to discover hidden talents and new passions they can enjoy for the rest of their lives,” said Mr. Rey O. Borillo, SPED center school principal.

“It was my son’s first time to participate in this kind of school brigade activity. Although it was new to him, he enjoyed it too much to the extent of wanting to paint the entire chair on his own without my help. That’s how dedicated he is. I’m grateful to Chevron for providing this opportunity for my child and the entire SPED center community to have a memorable experience, and for the activity’s lasting impact to the school,” shared Imelda Gueverra, one of the parent-volunteers.

The school library renovation and repainting of SPED center facilities form part of Chevron’s annual Week of Caring program which advocates diversity among its employees and business partners through volunteerism to benefit host communities and disadvantaged people.

Hanabishi donates appliances to newly-constructed school in Tacloban

Tacloban, Philippines. September 2, 2016 – Dozens of overjoyed children previously left homeless and school-less because of the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in Tacloban City in 2013 look on as GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) Founder and Ambassador Mel Tiangco (9th from left), Tacloban City Mayor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez (8th from left), Hanabishi representative Raniel Elip (leftmost), School Head Rommel Abeto (rightmost), other sponsors, and local officials cut the ribbon during the official turnover of the Kapuso Village Integrated School (KVIS) in Brgy. Sto. Niño, Tacloban on August 26.

In late 2013, the calamity ravaged not just thousands of homes but also hundreds of commercial establishments, infrastructure and institutions including local schools. This left many students, like those who used to go to some of the schools within or in nearby barangays which have not yet been rebuilt, to attend classes in makeshift rooms made from a patchwork of fragile wood and roof for almost three years. With their eagerness to continue studying despite the situation, KVIS proves to be heaven-sent, especially as it is within the village where most of the students’ families have also been relocated.

Hanabishi, the number one home-grown appliance brand in the country, donated appliances to furnish the new school built by the GMAKF in the GMA Kapuso Village in the barangay. The donations, which will benefit at least 400 students from Kindergarten to grade six, included ceiling fans, water dispensers, and stand fans, among others. This effort is a part of Hanabishi’s pledge to extend 1M worth of appliances for the communities in Tacloban affected by the Typhoon Yolanda.

Hanabishi President Jasper Ong shares, “Hanabishi has always believed in paying it forward and we are glad to be a part of our kababayans’ journey towards rehabilitation from Day 1. With a simple gesture like this on our part, we stay true to being a real Kapartner of the Filipino family.”

School Head Abeto, expressing gratitude to GMAKF and Hanabishi, says, “These donations from the GMA Kapuso Foundation and Hanabishi will truly make an impact to our students. Beyond the material contributions, I believe Hanabishi and GMAKF have given our children hope and the desire to dream once again after everything that our community has gone through.”

Hanabishi has been a partner of GMA Kapuso Foundation since 2012 and has already provided complete sets of home appliances for 200 houses in the Kapuso Village in Iligan and 600 houses in Leyte and Tacloban.

Worry-free clothing care for when the weather isn’t fair

Doing the laundry during the wet season using time- and cost-effective ways with Hanabishi
Doing the laundry during the wet season using time- and cost-effective ways with Hanabishi

Dad’s slacks and polos for office, kuya’s school uniform, ate’s favorite Sunday dress, bunso’s comfy pajamas. There’s just so much to wash, dry and press and in so little time. Even when it’s raining cats and dogs outside, mommies can try these four laundry hacks to save the day

1. Removing mud stains

Kuya comes home with mud splatters on his white school polo, no thanks to the hurrying car that sped by while he was walking near a rain puddle. If the stain hasn’t had time to seep through the fabric, hand-wash the part that has a stain first using a strong detergent, without wetting the whole fabric as the stain will just spread to the rest of the clothing. When the stain is removed, the entire garment can be cleaned in the washing machine.

Hanabishi offers fully automatic top load (HAWMD 170) and twin tub washing machines to suit Filipino households’ preferences and needs. As a consistent Kapartner ng Praktikal na Nanay at Bossing, Hanabishi makes available to the local market quality yet affordable products that stand the test of the seasons.

2. Ironing stubborn wrinkles

Mix 20ml of fabric softener with 80ml water in a spray bottle and spray clothes before ironing. This will allow the fabric to smoothen out wrinkles. To make life easier, the Hanabishi Flatiron Hi 89 has a built-in container and spray. Just fill the container with the mixture, spray and glide the wrinkles away!

Who wants to iron the whole day away, especially when it’s nicer to curl up and take a nap when the sky looks dark and sleepy? But if ironing is really a must (because dad still has to go to office, no matter what), Hanabishi has multiple flat iron models to choose from. Most models have thermostat and thermal fuse features so they shut off automatically when they reach the needed temperature. This avoids clothes from being burned. In addition, Hanabishi flat irons are non-stick, so they glide smoothly on different kinds of fabric without damaging the clothes.

3. Conserving electricity

Even if it’s tempting to dump all the clothes into the washing machine in one go to save time and energy, this practice actually uses more power and causes more friction which can damage the clothes. It’s better to divide the laundry into lighter loads and using shorter wash times per load.

When there is a high pile of clothes, Hanabishi has got it covered! Its Twin Tub Washing Machine series specifically the HWM 270 is equipped with a dryer that is high in power and low in electricity consumption.

Semi-dry clothes hung indoors will benefit from an open window so that air circulates freely to help it dry faster. For extra faster drying time, semi-dry clothes can also be ironed first before hanging them in an airy room.

Rainy season is usually a stressful one to moms. Good thing Hanabishi is a great garment care warrior!

MDPPA caps first half of 2016 with 42% y-o-y sales growth, targets more than 1M units sold by year-end

MDPPA 2015-2016 Mid-Year Sales Performance Comparison

MDPPA 2015-2016 Mid-Year Sales Performance Comparison

Manila, Philippines. August 18, 2016 – The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA), the premier group of motorcycle manufacturers in the country, whose members are: Honda Philippines, Inc., Kawasaki Motors Philippines, Inc., Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc., Suzuki Philippines, Inc. and Kymco Philippines, Inc., recorded a new sales benchmark after capping its first six-month performance with a 42 percent year-on-year sales growth. MDPPA members recorded combined sales of 544,699 motorcycle units in the first half of 2016, which exceeded previous projections.

With this rosy first half accomplishment, the motorcycle manufacturers group banks on the trajectory to continue and confidently targets to achieve the milestone of more than 1 million units sold by end-December this year. Based on previous years’ trends, July to December usually bring in better commerce, making the association bullish about reaching more than 1 million mark by the end of the year. Total sales for 2015 was at 850,509 units.

In terms of sales by motorcycle type, the Moped (MP) model or the underbone motorcycle holds the most number of units sold in the first half of 2016, overtaking the Business (BU) models category which led the numbers in H1 2015. With 205,636 units sold from January to June 2016, the MP class posted a 58 percent y-o-y growth.

2016 Mid-Year Performance: Sales per Model
2016 Mid-Year Performance:
Sales per Model

This is followed by sales of the BU category totaling 171,035 units.  The automatic category, meanwhile, with sales of 125,528 units, registered the greatest y-o-y growth of 66%.  The Street (ST) motorcycle category posted an 11 percent y-o-y growth with 42,149 units.

MDPPA President Rodel Pablo attributes this outstanding mid-year performance to various factors. “The introduction of affordable but reliable motorcycle models propelled the sales performance of MDPPA member manufacturers. The traffic congestion in major cities, such as Metro Manila, also prompts commuters to look for alternative modes of transportation. Commuters consider motorcycles as a fast and affordable transportation alternative,” he shared.

In addition, the introduction of fuel injection models was a welcome innovation for motorcycle enthusiasts, offering better fuel efficiency, and smoother and more consistent throttle response.

The country’s strong economic performance resulting to an increase in per capita income  and positive outlook have also contributed to MDPPA’s sales growth as the improving economy has allowed more consumers to purchase motorcycles. “The flourishing sales figures of the motorcycle industry are a clear indication of how the country’s improving economy contributed to the group’s mid-year performance. BU motorcycle numbers, for instance, show that many of our countrymen are making a living through tricycles or that many SMEs are using motorcycles in their daily operations for delivery services,” Pablo added.

MDPPA strengthens anti-counterfeiting advocacy

The group’s efforts in curbing the patronage of counterfeit products to promote road safety also contributed to the positive yield in the industry’s first half performance. “MDPPA remains a firm advocate of road safety. We’ve always been very active on this issue, communicating to people how dangerous it is to use counterfeit products instead of the genuine ones,” shared Pablo.

He also noted that the same factors could fuel further growth for the remainder of the year. In line with its road safety advocacy, the group conducts free seminars nationwide for riders’ groups and school children, as well as a road safety stickering campaign to promote the use of standard helmet.  The Road Safety Seminar aims to educate the rider-participants on how to be safe and responsible riders. The seminar module includes, among others, topics on choosing the right motorcycle and its proper operation, proper riding positions and appropriate riding gears. Representatives from the Land Transportation Office and the Philippine National Police are also invited to discuss on traffic rules and regulations and other relevant laws. Meanwhile, the module for children helps develop their safety awareness through illustrations,  interactive discussions and practical demonstration on topics like traffic signs and road markings, right of way, road courtesy, and pedestrian safety.
