MDPPA holds road safety talks for San Beda College Alabang scouts

PR Photo for MDPPA
Safety first: San Beda College Alabang’s (SBCA) girl and boy scouts are all ears as a SBCA teacher-trainer talks about road safety practices.

Manila, Philippines. October 5, 2016 – Steadfast on its drive to educate more people on keeping safe on the streets, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) brought their road safety advocacy activities to San Beda College Alabang and conducted a seminar for the school’s more than 100 girl and boy scouts from the 3rd, 5th and 6th grades last September 2, 2016. As role models, the scouts learned about coping with the increasing risks students face on the road daily, and how they can share the knowledge to their schoolmates.

“Road accidents involving kids are increasing by the day, and that is alarming,” said MDPPA Road Safety Vice Chairman Magnus Mateo. “Streets are like jungles and those are dangerous to kids unless they are properly educated,” he shared.

MDPPA pointed out that young pedestrians’ field of vision is limited compared to adults owing to their short height.  This, and some other factors cited on different studies, increase children’s risks for being involved in road accidents.

During the seminar, the scouts learned how to properly cross the street with or without traffic lights, and what to do to ensure safety when walking down the street or doing outdoor activities. The MDPPA team also discussed road visibility during bad weather, and drivers’ blind spot, and how to be more attentive during these situations.

MDPPA has been conducting road safety seminars in different schools since 2013, and has trained around 300 students all over the country about street safety.

“We hope this effort will inspire teachers to develop a course of study that will incorporate road safety awareness,” Mateo added.

Chevron coastal clean-up clears nesting grounds for endangered Olive-Ridley sea turtles

PR Photo for WOC 2016 Day 5
CPI employees unite with community volunteers to improve the state of San Pascual, Batangas’ only coastline which also borders the Chevron Terminal

San Pascual, Batangas, September 23, 2016 — About 200 employees of Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants, united with over 100 town residents and students of San Pascual, Batangas to gather a total of 514 garbage bags’ or 2.5 tons worth of rubbish as a result of the coastal clean-up activity which is part of Chevron’s annual Week of Caring (WOC) activity.

Chevron times its cleanup to coincide with the seasonal nesting of the said turtles at this coastal area, which occurs from September to December each year. As a result, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has declared the area as a sanctuary for the Olive-Ridley sea turtles.

“These kinds of clean-up activities let us reconnect with the local community and to give back to the environment in the spirit of volunteerism. On top of that, these also motivate our employees to be more socially responsible. We are positive that the sense of fulfillment these activities bring to our people would translate to increased productivity and good performance at work”, shared Peter Morris, CPI Country Chairman.

The annual coastal clean-up is the final activity of the five-day WOC program which this year also included school facilities improvement, road safety education, and art therapy session. This is the ninth edition of the WOC which advocates volunteerism among CPI employees and business partners.

Chevron demonstrates the art of caring during a volunteer program for pediatric cancer patients

PR Photo of WOC 2016 Day 4
Christmas comes early for CPI volunteers and students showing lifted spirits as they make cards for the season. Art therapy has been proven to help speedy recovery of patients.

Manila, Philippines. September 22, 2016 — Volunteerism takes on a creative and healing turn when Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants, scheduled the fourth day of the 2016 Week of Caring (WOC) program as a recreational art therapy session for pediatric patients from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Cancer Institute.

Twenty employees of CPI volunteered their time and companionship for one whole day of outreach activity that forms part of this year’s five-day WOC program running from September 19 to 23.

With the holiday season just around the corner, the CPI volunteers and the children designed Christmas cards during the session. The Christmas cards created were later pinned to a wooden board for everyone to see.

The WOC volunteers learned that creative expression can lead to an improvement in the healing process and betterment of the well-being of the cancer patients. Dr. Jorge Ignacio of the PGH Cancer Institute underscored the importance of art therapy sessions such as this to cancer patients. “Through this art exposure, we found out that the children have the artistic capability that can be developed with proper guidance and motivation,” he explained.

“Aside from that, art therapy also stimulates positive hormones which can help improve their treatment. The artistic value of the outputs that they produced gives them a better sense of well-being, increased productivity rate and a sense of accomplishment. These are things that are very important to them,” he added.

Irish Trasadas, 14, one of the outpatients who volunteered to show her Christmas card in front of the audience couldn’t help but shed a tear as she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Chevron and the CPI volunteers who guided them during the art therapy day. “I am very thankful to Chevron for spending time with us. I really enjoyed the activity because it helped me relax and it also gained me new friends,” she shared.

CPI HR Manager Ramon Ortiz shared, “As a company, some of the most invaluable things we can offer these children are our time, companionship and friendship which are something they can really appreciate more than anything else. We are very happy to be able to provide meaningful opportunities like this so our employees can keep inspired to give back to communities not just in terms of material things.”

Week of Caring, now on its ninth edition, is a yearly social responsibility project of Chevron which boosts volunteerism and helping the needy among CPI employees and business partners.

Chevron’s Week of Caring advocates road safety among children

PR Photo for WOC Day 2
Students and CPI employees learning basic road safety signs through fun-filled activities

Makati, Philippines, September 21, 2016 — Students of Makati Elementary School will now be more road safety conscious during their commute thanks to Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants. As part of CPI’s 2016 Week of Caring (WOC) program, CPI employees in partnership with Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) conducted a road safety education program with roleplaying activities and outdoor games to teach safety in a child-friendly format.

Held on Day 3 of this year’s WOC, which is the annual corporate volunteerism program of CPI, the seminar targeted grade five and six students whose parents bring them to school using motorcycles. Studies show that motorcycle riders more than 50 percent risk of figuring in an accident.

Spreading the CPI culture of safety and dedication to fostering safer communities, 34  CPI volunteers participated in the activities especially in the role playing games to make the learning activity more meaningful and fun for the students. The students also received motorcycle helmets to ensure safer travel as part of the application of the program.

“At Chevron, we place such a high value on safety that it has become a real way of life for the employees. Road safety procedures are strictly practiced in the office especially with the Chevron riding technique training. Thus we are so happy to be able to spread this culture of safety to children during the Week of Caring,” said Atty. Raisa Bautista, CPI Manager for Policy, Government and Public Affairs

“It is essential that we instill obedience and discipline to the students at their young age because as they grow old, they will bring with them their knowledge on basic road safety procedures.” said Mr. Alberto Suansing, Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership Secretary-General.

Week of Caring is a five-day program that advocates volunteerism among its employees and business partners. CPI has been implementing the WOC in the Philippines for the past nine years.

Chevron kicks off Week of Caring with improvement of facilities of Laguna elementary schools

PR Photo on Day 1 WOC
A Chevron employee working together with a student to repaint a brighter learning facility

Laguna, Philippines, September 19, 2016 — Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, jumpstarted its Week of Caring (WOC) 2016 by repainting school facilities such as library, armchairs and playground rides for two elementary schools in Laguna: Bay Central Elementary School and Calamba Special Education (SPED) center.

The CPI volunteers worked with the students to repaint Bay Central’s library specifically, its 11 bookshelves and 1,600 square feet of concrete walls. While, armchairs, playground rides, the perimeter wall and two steel gates were repainted at the SPED center.

A total of 195 volunteer hours were logged in during the first two days of the annual Chevron volunteerism program. The CPI volunteers also donated a hundred books to the library’s “Knowledge is Energy” corner which made learning more fun for the students with the added visuals.

“By helping renovate school facilities to make them more conducive to learning, and especially by focusing on improving schools’ libraries, we hope to instill in the minds of the students that the library is still a very good place for knowledge and learning even in the digital age,” said Jhon Osorio, CPI Finance Manager.

The heads of the schools stressed the impact of the school brigade activities of the Week of Caring. “It gave life to our library and improved the school’s learning resource management and development system. Our library’s new fully polished condition creates a good atmosphere and convenience to cater to the student’s needs,” said Nemeflor Gumobao, Bay Central Elementary School principal.

“It’s the first time our children encountered this kind of activity where they had a great level of participation and involvement with a social investment program. It gave them a sense of fulfillment, boosted their self-confidence and created an opportunity for them to discover hidden talents and new passions they can enjoy for the rest of their lives,” said Mr. Rey O. Borillo, SPED center school principal.

“It was my son’s first time to participate in this kind of school brigade activity. Although it was new to him, he enjoyed it too much to the extent of wanting to paint the entire chair on his own without my help. That’s how dedicated he is. I’m grateful to Chevron for providing this opportunity for my child and the entire SPED center community to have a memorable experience, and for the activity’s lasting impact to the school,” shared Imelda Gueverra, one of the parent-volunteers.

The school library renovation and repainting of SPED center facilities form part of Chevron’s annual Week of Caring program which advocates diversity among its employees and business partners through volunteerism to benefit host communities and disadvantaged people.
