The COVID-19 pandemic caught us all off guard, forcing the world’s population to stay indoors for months now. Businesses and organizations have had to make quick adjustments to stay afloat. Companies were not able to anticipate the impact of the pandemic and prepare accordingly, and most are serving their clients and supporting their employees even when not in full capacity and while helping flatten the curve.

As many offices remain closed and normal business operations halted, budgets are running low and priorities need realignment. Sustaining pre-COVID-19 efforts, including PR plans, in such a scenario has been a key concern.

More businesses, in particular smaller ones, are implementing cost-cutting mechanisms, and PR activities are usually one of the first to be crossed out as they are generally seen as an expense item. Some brands have been fortunate with this strategy and are able to generate interest in their products and services, subsequently strengthening footprint and sales. Other brands have not been so lucky and reaped negative results.

What Does the COVID-19 Outbreak Mean for the Philippines’ BPO Industry?

As much of the Philippines remains under ‘enhanced community quarantine’ due to Covid-19, the country’s vital business process outsourcing (BPO) industry has adjusted to new working practices and shifts in demand.

The strict lockdown measures implemented on the main island of Luzon will remain in place until at least April 30. At present, most of the island’s 57m residents are confined to their homes and local areas. Security personnel have stepped up monitoring to prevent people from travelling outside unless they are fulfilling an essential task or profession.

Chevron Supports COVID-19 Frontliners and Health Workers

Chevron companies in the country recently teamed up to donate cash and fuels amounting to almost P1 million to provide safe transportation and personal protective equipment to frontliners and health workers.

Chevron Philippines Inc. (Caltex), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants, together with Chevron Holdings Inc. (CHI), donated P500,000 to the Philippine General Hospital Medical Foundation Inc. (PGHMFI) to address the shortage in medical supplies and personal protective equipment frontline healthcare professionals need for proper patient management. The country’s largest public tertiary hospital, PGH is one of the designated referral hospitals in Metro Manila for COVID-19 patients.
